Surgery For Cataract

Cataract is one of the most commonly found eye problems in the current era. At IRIS eye hospital, we are fully equipped with the most modern technology for performing suture-less cataract surgeries. Cataract surgery also called lens replacement surgery is the removal of the natural lens of the eye that has developed an opacification, which is referred to as a cataract, and its replacement with an intraocular lens.

In Cataract surgery, the lens inside your eye that has become cloudy is removed and replaced with an artificial lens (called an intraocular lens, or IOL) to restore clear vision.

Cataract Surgery Procedure

Cataract Surgery typically is performed as an outpatient procedure and does not require an overnight stay in a hospital or other clinic facility.

Most modern cataract procedures like the ones conducted in Iris Eye Hospital, involve the use of a high-frequency ultrasound device that breaks up the cloudy lens into small pieces, which are then gently removed from the eye with suction. Such procedures require expert eye surgeons and IRIS is proud that we have a few among the best in the industry currently.

After all remnants of the cloudy lens have been removed from eye, best cataract surgeons from our team inserts a clear intraocular lens, positioning it securely behind the iris and pupil, in the same location the natural lens was present (In special cases, an IOL might be placed in front of the iris and pupil, but this is less common).

The surgeon then completes the cataract removal and IOL implantation procedure by closing the incision in the eye (a stitch may or may not be needed), and a protective shield is placed over the eye to keep it safe in the early stages of cataract surgery recovery.

How painful is cataract surgery?

Some people prolong their decision to have cataract surgery due to worry that the procedure will be painful. Anaesthetic (numbing) eye drops are applied to your eye to prevent discomfort and pain.

How long does it take to recover from cataract surgery?

These side effects usually improve within a few days but it can take 3 to 4 weeks to recover fully. If you need new glasses, you won’t be able to order them until your eye has completely healed – usually after 4 weeks.

Do's & Dont's after Cataract Surgery?

For a safe and speedy recovery after cataract surgery, follow these tips:

  1. Don’t drive on the first day.
  2. Don’t do any heavy lifting or strenuous activity for a few weeks.
  3. Immediately after the procedure, avoid bending over, to prevent putting extra pressure on your eye.
  4. If at all possible, don’t sneeze or vomit right after surgery.
  5. Be careful walking around after surgery, and don’t bump into doors or other objects.
  6. To reduce risk of infection, avoid swimming or using a hot tub during the first week.
  7. Don’t expose your eye to irritants such as grime, dust and wind during the first few weeks after surgery.
  8. Don’t rub your eye. This is applicable even when you aren’t recovering from surgery.
